Internet phone software has been popping up for years. Of course, the big wig corporations like AT&T or Sprint don't want you to know there are "alternatives" to there outrages phone bills each month. Not only that, but you can do many more things with a telephony VOIP than you can with your own personal phone. Such as transmit fax, video, or any other type of data on the wire.

The VO in VoIP stands for Voice Over, the IP means Internet Protocol, which is just another fancy word for saying that numbers are being translated into a website. Like www.Google.com or www.games.com. Just the way phone numbers work to connect through homes & businesses, Internet protocol's work the same way except they connect to websites. But, what VoIP does differently is send a live voice feed over the IP.

Skype, a VOIP service, has many features and has been shown in many online magazines, with there chat, file transfer, voicemail, and Skype to phone, phone to Skype networking. Xten, now CounterPath, is another VoIP company, giving the user a chose between free or charged software, both having very beautiful and fine interfaces, much like a regular telephony.

Yahoo is another popular one to choose from, letting the user send files of whatever type to each other with a relatively simple push button interface. The only draw back is its constant dealings with message spammers.

If the advance user is looking for something challenging to play with they can always download Asterisk PBX, the software is known for its advancements and can run on many unique systems such as Linux for PPC, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Mac OS X Jaguar. Of course if you're like me and just want to kick back relax and chat than you'll enjoy MSN's Messenger or Google Talk, with simple commands you'll be able to just jump right in and hold conversations to anyone you'd like.
