SIP - Session Initiation Protocol
Can you say "multi-media"..?
SIP is a text-based signaling technology used to initiate interactive communication sessions between users such as voice and video mail, chat-forums, virtual reality and interactive games.
Session Initiation Protocol is the industry standard when it comes to interactive technology.
Members in a session can communicate via multicast or via a mesh of unicast relations, or a combination of these. Media and participants can be added to an existing session.
SIP can be used to initiate sessions as well as invite members to sessions that have been advertised and established by other means.
SIP sessions can be advertised using multicast protocols such as SAP, electronic mail, news groups, web pages or directories (LDAP), among others.
Now SIP is one of the leading signaling protocols for VoIP, along with H.323.
