VoIP glossary - PBX

PBX: (also known as Private Branch Exchange or Private Business eXchange)

PBX technology is used to set up connections between several telephone sets (for instance, the system enables mapping a dialed number to a certain phone along with checking this phone's availability); to keep the connection active for as long as it is required; to gather and save various statistics (i.e. dialed numbers, calls length etc).

PBXs are usually equipped with many additional functions to support a fully-functional phone connection network in the office.
