VoIP glossary - DID - Caller ID
DID(Caller ID): Better known as Direct Inward Dialing
A service that phone service providers will offer large company's enabling them to have a cache of internal numbers available for it's customers to personally connect with internal work stations.
For example, instead of having an operator on hand to personally connect you, the company has individual numbers assigned to internal workstations, thus cutting down on operator phone traffic and the number of physical telephone lines connected to a telephone number database.
Wouldn't it be great if you could who determine where an incoming phone call was coming from, even before you picked up the phone? Such is the beauty of the caller ID.
Whether or not you know who that number belongs to is another matter.
But at least you can see the number before hand. Always a good thing with ex-wives, ex-husbands and mother-in-laws.
